suPAR Extended

suPAR is the soluble form of the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) expressed on the cell membrane of immune cells, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells and is upregulated in inflammation sites. uPAR interacts and cooperates with many ligands and receptors, mainly integrin, to facilitate intracellular signalling, cellular migration, cellular adhesion and tissue remodelling.

suPAR is released during immune inflammation or activation and although it is not specific for a disease, the circulating levels of suPAR reflect the severity and prognostic outcome of many infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

One of the most interesting applications of the marker is that it can predict early clinical deterioration due to suspected infections and evaluate the severity of chronic inflammation.
